The father of Zach Hoffpauir, the former Stanford football player who died last week at the age of 26, said the family has donated Hoffpauir’s brain to concussion research.
Doug Hoffpauir told the Mercury News on Sunday night that the process is underway with Boston University, which specializes in the study of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy — the degenerative brain disease linked to head trauma in football and other sports.
“We won’t find out for over a year,’’ Doug Hoffpauir said. “I hate that it’s because of this, but maybe some positive can come of it. We’re going to let them do the research.”

Doug Hoffpauir declined to disclose the specifics of his son’s death last Thursday but said, “It was absolutely not suicide, and please make that clear.”
His son, he added, was excited to begin his new job: As a defensive backs coach at Northern Colorado under Ed McCaffrey, whose son, Christian, was Hoffpauir’s close friend and former Stanford teammate.
